Product Description

These Ocean Themed Math Activities use goldfish crackers as math manipulatives to teach counting, 1-to-1 correspondence, modeling addition, and solving addition problems with sums to 12. Three differentiated levels make this one resource serve a wide range of student abilities — from early counting to independent addition practice. The edible manipulative makes math irresistibly engaging for early learners and reluctant math students.

🐠 Perfect for:

  • Special Education teachers building counting and addition IEP goals
  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) targeting following directions, number vocabulary, and math language goals
  • Autism classrooms working on counting, 1-to-1 correspondence, and addition
  • Occupational Therapists working on pincer grasp and fine motor skills (using tweezers/tongs with goldfish)
  • ABA therapists running discrete trial counting and addition programs
  • Early Childhood, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade teachers
  • Math Intervention and RTI / MTSS teachers
  • Homeschool families with young math learners

🌊 What's Included — 3 Differentiated Levels:

Level 1 — Basic Counting (Numbers 1–12):

  • 12 counting mats
  • Number recognition and 1-to-1 correspondence
  • Students count goldfish onto each numbered mat

Level 2 — Modeling Simple Addition (Sums to 12):

  • 12 different mats
  • 12 simple addition problems
  • Students model the math problem with goldfish and solve

Level 3 — Solving Addition Independently (Sums to 12):

  • 1 mat and a flip book covering ALL addition problems with sums to 12
  • Students read a problem, solve it on the ocean math mat, and record answers
  • Dry-erase friendly OR includes a paper recording sheet

🎯 Skills Targeted:

Counting 1–12, number recognition, 1-to-1 correspondence (K.CC.B.4), basic addition (K.OA.A.1, 1.OA.B.3), modeling addition with manipulatives, solving addition problems with sums to 12, math language and following directions, ocean vocabulary, fine motor skills (pincer grasp with tweezers/tongs), independent work, and answer recording (handwriting / dry-erase).

How to Use:

Set up at a math center with a bowl of goldfish crackers AND small tweezers or tongs (sneaks in fine motor practice). Level 1 for early learners working on counting. Level 2 for students modeling math problems with manipulatives. Level 3 for students solving addition problems independently and recording answers. At the end of the activity, students get to eat their goldfish — built-in reinforcement!

🦐 Ways to Use:

  • Math centers (counting AND addition)
  • Ocean, summer, and beach thematic units
  • Speech therapy math language sessions
  • Math intervention (RTI / MTSS Tier 2 & 3)
  • Independent work systems (TEACCH)
