Product Description

This Penguin Adapted Book, "Hungry Hungry Penguin," teaches counting 1–10 and number word recognition through a fun, rhyming, interactive story. Students match a word and picture to each page as the teacher reads the silly story of a hungry penguin gobbling up fish — then extend learning through four supplemental activities targeting sequencing, sorting, vocabulary labeling, inferencing, and number labeling.

🐧 Perfect for:

  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) targeting number vocabulary, counting, inferencing, and following directions goals
  • Special Education teachers building winter and Kindergarten counting units
  • Autism classrooms needing structured, interactive winter activities
  • Occupational Therapists working on fine motor skills (Velcro manipulation)
  • ABA therapists running discrete trial counting and number ID programs
  • Early Childhood, Pre-K, and Kindergarten teachers
  • Math Intervention and RTI / MTSS teachers
  • Homeschool families with young learners

❄️ What's Included:

  • 1 Adapted Interactive Book — Hungry Hungry Penguin
  • 1 Sequencing stick activity
  • 1 Sorting / classification activity
  • 1 Vocabulary labeling AND making inferences activity
  • 1 Set of numbers labeling cards

🎯 Skills Targeted:

Counting 1–10, counting backward from 10 (Common Core K.CC.A.2), number identification, number word recognition, number labeling, sequencing and story retell, sorting and classification, making inferences, vocabulary labeling, expressive and receptive language, listening comprehension, following directions, and fine motor skills.

Sample Text:

"Ten little fish were swimming in the sea.

One little fish said, 'You can't catch me!'

In dove the penguin with a 'Waddle-wiggle-swish.'

He gurgled and he gobbled and he ate that fish!

Nine little fish were swimming in the sea.

One little fish said, 'You can't catch me!'

In dove the penguin with a 'Waddle-wiggle-swish.'

He gurgled and he gobbled and he ate that fish."

How to Use:

In a small group, the teacher or therapist reads the story while students match a word and picture to each page. The countdown storyline (10 fish → 1 fish) builds counting backward from 10 — a Common Core Kindergarten math standard. After the book, extend the lesson with the supplemental activities — sequencing, sorting, vocabulary labeling, inferencing, and number labeling. Independent learners can complete the activities in a workstation or literacy center.

🌨️ Ways to Use:

  • Winter thematic units (December–February)
  • Speech therapy small group sessions
  • Math centers (counting forward AND backward 1–10)
  • Independent work systems (TEACCH)
  • ABA discrete trial counting and number ID training
  • Math intervention (RTI / MTSS Tier 2 & 3)
  • Literacy centers and morning meetings
  • Whole-class winter read-aloud
  • Take-home homework and tele-therapy practice
