Suggestions for how to use this unit:
Adapted Book:
The teacher or therapist will read the adapted book with students, as students follow along, match the correct pictures to each page, and learn to identify who each community helper is, and how they help us.
Sample Text:
Doctors help us.
They help us when we are sick or hurt.
Police officers help us.
They help keep us safe.
Who Goes With What Matching Mat:
In a small group, center or independent work station, students will match each community helper to the object that they use.
Community Helpers Big Flips Matching Activities:
There are three sets included for students working at three different levels. Level 1--Matching community helpers, picture to picture. Level 2--Matching each community helper to the word. Level 3--Matching each community helper to the sentence that describes them.
Community Helpers Wh-Questions:
This set of WH Questions includes 20 different questions about community helpers. Students can indicate their answers by pointing, clipping, or using a dry erase marker. Sample questions include:
Who works at a hospital?
Who works at a school?
Which vehicle does a police officer drive?
Which vehicle does a farmer use?
Who works at a post office?
Interactive Bulletin Board Posters:
The interactive bulletin board posters can be displayed on your interactive bulletin board. Students can interact with the poster by matching the correct community helper to each poster. You can also print and laminate a second set for your workstations or centers and put them on a metal ring to create another work task.
