This Friendship Adapted Activities: "You're My Special Friend," is a social story unit. This adapted book and activities teaches students about how to be a good friend through kindness. It also teaches appropriate ways to be a good friend to others.
This unit includes: 1 interactive adapted book, 16 task cards for practice and review, and 9 full color posters (visuals) that can be displayed in a "cool-down," area or kept on a metal ring at student desks. It also includes a black and white reflection sheet that students may use to reflect on how to be a good friend. See photos and video for examples.
This unit works well as a small group activity and especially with social skills groups because the activities are designed to foster conversations about friendship and being a good friend.
The adapted book provides a fun and interactive way for students of all abilities to participate in learning strategies for being kind, or being a better friend.
Sample Text:
"If you're sad and need to cry...
If your laces need a tie...
I'll be right there standing by.
You're my special friend.
If you need someone to read...
or share with you the thing you need...
I'll be there in record speed.
You're my special friend.
If you need a wave hello,
or help to clean a big "uh-oh."
I'll be there and we both know...
You're my special friend."

After the teacher or therapist has read the book with students, students can complete the task cards and discuss them as a group.
There is also a set of "Ways to Be Kind" posters/or visuals that are designed to serve as visual reinforcers.
If your students enjoy and benefit from these activities, there are many more adapted books in my collection. Please see the complete adapted book collection below.
