This Valentine's Day Adapted Book, "That's Not the Heart" focuses on adjectives, -wh questions, and sequencing events.
In this adapted book, Remy wants to make her Mom the "perfect paper heart" but most of the hearts that she makes are a little to "this" or a little too "that."
Sample text:
"It was Valentine's Day and Remy wanted to make her Mom the perfect, paper heart.
First she made her a yellow heart. "That's not the heart," said Remy. That heart is
too plain.
Next she made her a purple heart. "That's not the heart," said Remy. That heart is
too swirly.
Then she made her a blue heart. "That's not the heart," said Remy. That heart is
too tiny."
With this adapted book, a teacher or therapist reads the book to students, as they follow along and match a heart and descriptive words to each page. At the end of the story, there are wh- questions that students will answer by matching the correct answer piece to each page. Students working independently can work through the book in a literacy center or work station.
There are also extension activities included. These include a sequencing mat to sequence the events of the story, an open ended activity where students create their own "that's not the hat," descriptions, and a words to pictures matching activity that focuses on the adjectives in the book.
I think your students are going to have so much fun with this story! ;)
